HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – City officials have made some significant changes to the evening contraflow along Kapiolani Boulevard.
The changes start Monday.
Officials with the city’s Department of Transportation Services say the changes are designed to help facilitate eastbound traffic flow along Kapiolani Boulevard, and the modifications were based on the data they gathered from the contraflow pilot project over the summer last year.
Here are the changes:
- Left turns from the westbound direction on Kapiolani Boulevard into Waikiki at McCully Street will be allowed.
- Left turns from Kalakaua Avenue, mauka-bound, onto Kapiolani Boulevard, will be allowed.
- Eastbound left turns from Kapiolani Boulevard at Keeaumoku, Kaheka, and McCully Streets will be allowed.
- Left turns from the westbound direction on Kapiolani Boulevard onto Atkinson Drive will not be allowed.
The afternoon contraflow on Kapiolani Boulevard has been around since 1952, but the left turn restrictions has recently been the source of rising complaints.
Drivers heading west on Kapiolani Boulevard had been restricted from making a left turn from the start of the contraflow in McCully all the way to Ward — a restriction that causes headaches for drivers trying to access the Waikiki and Ala Moana areas.
The morning contraflow coning on Kapiolani and Kalakaua will not be affected.
