Two trails at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park have reopened after being closed due to numerous earthquakes linked to a months-long eruption of Kilauea volcano last year, according to a statement released Tuesday by the park.

The eruption lasted four months, from May until August.

A 7.3-mile section of the Kau Desert Trail, from Highway 11 to he Kaaha Trail intersection is now open, as is a 4.8-mile stretch of the Hilina Pali Overlook. The park also repaired adn reopened a 0.8-mile portion of Halemaumau Trail, from the rainforest summit of Kilauea near the Volcano House to the steaming caldera floor.

“We are elated to reopen these sections of the park to our visitors again,” said acting parks Superintendent Laura Schuster.

Park officials also noted that the recent rainfall has reduced the fire risk on Mauna Loa Road, which leads to the Mauna Loa Lookout.
