HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – An affordable housing project for once homeless families on Oahu just got a hefty financial boost.
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation donated $3 million to the organization responsible for Kahauiki Village, a successful collection of transitional homes for families located near Sand Island.
The large donation will help kick off the next phase of the project, which includes building 114 homes by the spring of 2019.
“We’re committed to the lifelong generation of the young children that are here in the community. We want stability, we want them to be able to dream and really realize their aspirations,” Corbett Kalama, Harry and Jeanette Weinberg’s executive vice president said.
The foundation said that helping low-income and struggling families is one of their passions which inspired them to donate to the cause.
Some 30 homes have already been built under phase 1 of Kahauiki Village, and are already filled with families.
