Honolulu police said an armed suspect who threatened a man in a Kalihi game room early this morning was disarmed in a scuffle in which the gun discharged.
There were no gunshot injuries, but the suspect was taken to a hospital in serious condition after an altercation with a security guard.
Police said the incident began at about 3:25 a.m. when the 30-year-old male suspect, armed with a pistol, entered a game room at the Ohana Grocery on the corner of Palama and Kanoa streets, and threatened another man. The two men fought and the firearm discharged twice but no one was hit.
Police said a male security guard fought with man. It was unclear if the guard was the man who was initially threatened.
Emergency Medical Services personnel treated the suspect, who sustained multiple head and face injuries in the assault, and took him to a hospital in serious condition.
Officers recovered the weapon at the scene and arrested the suspect on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening and a firearms charge.
Officers closed Palama Street, between North King Street and Lopez Lane, and Kanoa Street around 4 a.m. as they investigated. All streets were reopened by about 7:15 a.m.
