Arbor Day in Hawaii officially falls on the first Friday in November — which was two weeks ago — but the celebration continues.
Kalakaua Middle School students joined city officials on Friday to plant a few trees at Kalakaua District Park.
November marks the start of the rainy season in Hawaii, the perfect time to plant a tree.
Student Queena Jane Abarcar said “planting trees in the community is important ’cause it’s very sunny, especially during summer, and not a lot of kids have shady spots to cool down after school, especially since it’s hot in the classrooms, so planting trees definitely gives kids a chance to cool down and get their brain going again.”
Hawaiian Electric also celebrated Arbor Day by giving away 3,000 trees and shrubs on Oahu.
