What’s believed to be a piece of state history was recently recovered on Sand Island.
Ed Martinez Jr. and his wife were fishing in the area when they spotted something sticking out of the sand. Martinez pulled it out, took a good look, and realized it was something important.
He made a few calls and it turns out the bronze slab he found is a piece of the Liberty Bell, which was given to Hawaii by the U.S. Treasury back in 1950.
Officials are not sure how the piece went missing in the first place, or how it ended up on Sand Island.
