Kalihi native Anu Solomon has been named to the Maxwell Award watch list for college football’s best player.

The University of Arizona sophomore-to-be quarterback could join fellow Hawaii natives Marcus Mariota (2014) and Manti Te’o (2012) as recent winners of the 78-year-old award.

Among the 80 players named to the watch list, Solomon is one of only 20 sophomores to be recognized. Despite the accolade, he’s not concerned with individual high expectations for 2015.

“I really don’t think about it a lot. I hear about it and it just goes in one ear and out the other. Right now it’s just focusing on the role of the true quarterback, you know, when I have to be that guy who make sure everybody does things correctly and how the coaches want it,” Solomon said.

In 2014 as the Wildcats’ first freshman to ever start the season opener at quarterback, Solomon led Arizona to their innagural Pac-12 south division championship while completing 58% of his passes for 3,793 yards and 28 touchdowns to just 9 interceptions.

Arizona opens their 2015 season in Tucson September 3rd against the University of Texas at San Antonio.
