The Joint Employment Management System (JEMS) held its annual job fair Sept. 10 at Club Pearl, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Recruiters from local businesses, mainland companies and government agencies were on hand recruiting to fill job vacancies ranging from entry level to highly technical and professional positions.

“About 90 companies are here at the job fair this year,” said Susan Hodge, JEMS director.

Fifteen of the companies had not previously been involved in the JEMS job fair, and this year marked the first time that government agencies from the state of Hawaii participated in the event.

In 2013, employers at the JEMS job fair collected about 350 resumes. However, Hodge believes handing out resumes is only one benefit the job fair offers to those seeking employment.

“It’s an opportunity to network,” she said. “People can chat with employers and make a good impression and then follow up later.”

JEMS is a family readiness initiative funded by Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam to help active duty, retirees and family members find employment.

JEMS acts an advocate for job seekers from the military community and serves as a central point of contact for businesses to reach these job seekers.

In addition to the annual job fair, JEMS provides services and assistance to job-seekers through their website. Registering allows individuals to search for jobs by job title, company name, geographical area, job category, work status, and add date. There is also a resume builder and skills checklist.
