Neighbors rescue Kalihi woman from burning home

Wayne Mason lives just a few feet away from the home that caught fire.

It happened on Kaauwai Place in Kalihi just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

“Wasn’t sure what was burning. And then my nephews got up, came in the living room and said, ‘Eh! What’s burning?’ We said, ‘Nothing.’ Then he looked through the window and the next house next door was in flames,” said Mason.

“Talking about the flames being so close to your home, were you scared?” KHON2 asked.

“Oh yeah! You gotta be scared. Because if it catches this house, this house can go up in flames real quick,” said Mason.

But Mason didn’t let his fear get in the way. He quickly sprung into action.

“We opened the door and the flames was already shooting out of here,” said Mason. “So as soon as I came out, I just grabbed the hose. The flames was already above the door already. So I grabbed it, turned it on real quick, full blast, and just started aiming.”

Mason says his nephews quickly ran to the back of the home to get the other hose. Soon after, they heard a cry for help.

It turns out, Mason’s neighbor — a 67-year-old woman — was still inside.

“So I told my nephews to go get her out because there’s only one door and that’s were the flames was, right by the door. And it was creeping more into the house,” said Mason.

His nephews broke the jalousies and one of them climbed through the window.

“They pulled her out from the window and then he jumped out. I know he said he covered her face with the wet towel ’cause she couldn’t breathe. Had too much smoke,” Mason said.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, the woman suffered burns to her left shoulder and arm. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

As for the woman’s pets, they were found alive.

“She had two dogs in there. The fire department found one small dog and then they found the other one this morning. The thing came out from hiding,” said Mason.

Damage to the home and its contents are estimated at $25,000.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
