Speakers question downsizing Aloha Stadium

A former University of Hawaii football player and other speakers urged state officials to replace Aloha Stadium with a facility that has seating close to the current stadium.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports businessman Kent Untermann and others spoke Thursday at a public meeting of the Aloha Stadium Authority.

Aloha Stadium seats 50,000 people.

Untermann says it would be a travesty to replace it with a stadium that seats 30,000. Others want a stadium that could add temporary seating.

A report to the authority by the New York firm Foley & Lardner recommends a 30,000 to 35,000-seat stadium that could be built for $132 million to $192 million.

A state report says estimates it will cost $120 million to keep the current stadium in operation for five to 10 years.
