A 55-year-old man died after he was hit by a city bus Thursday morning on North King Street near Gulick Avenue in Kalihi, according to Emergency Medical Services officials.
This happened at around 4:30 a.m. Paramedics say the man died at the scene.
North King Street has been closed from Middle Street to Gulick Avenue while police investigate. Click here to see LIVE traffic updates.
The road was reopened by 8:35 a.m.
Police say the pedestrian was walking in a marked crosswalk when he was hit. There is damage to the bus’ windshield where the pedestrian was struck.
Police also say visibility may have been a factor since it happened before the sun came up. Investigators will continue to look into the cause of the accident.
Oahu Transit Services released the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened by this accident. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends. We are fully cooperating with HPD in their investigation and have also started our own internal investigation.”
OTS says the operator of the bus is 54 years old and has seven years of service.
This is the 30th traffic fatality on Oahu, which police say is below last year’s level on this date.
