The spider-web fractures and the hole in the car windshield show the force of impact when the victim was struck.

At about 12:40 a.m. Sunday, Honolulu police were called to the scene. It happened on Kamehameha Highway near Keo Place in Kaaawa.

Police say the skateboarder was traveling in the Kahuku-bound direction when he rode into the path of the car, also heading towards Kahuku. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Sunday, KHON2 spoke to the victim’s friend who was with him at the time of the accident. He declined our request for an on-camera interview, but identified his friend as 26-year-old Bernardo Bernard of Salt Lake.

Bernard’s friend, who didn’t want to be identified, says the two were coming back from Swanzy Beach Park, less than half-a-mile away from the friend’s home.

Family members and friends of Bernard gathered at the scene of the accident. They say he was a talented young man whose life was cut too short.

Many of them came with flowers in hand to place on the side of the road.

The friend says Bernard was well-known skater who rode for the local company, In4mation.

He’s still trying to cope with the loss of his friend and says this incident will continue to haunt him.

The driver of the car, 24-year-old of Laie, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and negligent homicide. He wasn’t injured. Davis has not yet been charged.

Police say speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

This is the 25th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 27 at the same time last year.
