A showdown is looming in federal court to settle the question of whether sweepstakes machines are really gambling devices.
Honolulu police swept into a place that features sweepstakes machines in Aiea on Tuesday.
“We’re only three weeks away from going to trial on this issue. That’s why we’re puzzled that they’re taking this action now. Why couldn’t they wait to find out and hear from a judge to find out what’s going on?!” Prize World owner Tracy Yoshimura said.
Yoshimura is fighting the city on Bill 30 which would outlaw his machines, and that measure is advancing in the City Council with another public hearing on the proposal scheduled for May 7 at Kapolei Hale.
