In celebration of National Craft Month, a free open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hickam Arts & Crafts Center.
Patrons can visit all five sections of the center, including ceramics/pottery, framing, engraving, woodworking and the sales store and see the services offered. Free hot dogs and soft drinks will be available.
New programs and instructors will be showcased with instructors on hand to answer questions. Teachers in digital photography and Zentangle will display their works and discuss upcoming classes. Zen-tangle is described as an easy-to-learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. In addition, the new acrylics instructor will be offering “make-n-takes.”
Kids can receive mini lessons in origami (the Japanese art of paper folding) at one of several “creation stations” set up in the center. Crafting demonstrations and displays throughout the center will provide customers a glimpse of what the center encompasses.
“I hope they come away with a knowledge of the broad scope of programs we provide and the importance of creativity to a child and all ages,” said Donna Sommer, arts and crafts director.
Door prizes, special sales in the retail store and information on the next scheduled classes are other highlights of the event.
