City hopes to open Pearl Harbor DMV

The space is there so why not use it?

That’s what the city is saying as it considers opening a new drivers license office at Pearl Harbor.

An empty space, complete with teller windows, sits at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

The city wants to turn it into a working DMV that would be open to military members, their families and civilian employees who work on base.

“What we’re looking to do is two times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we’re going to have people from other satellite city halls, Pearlridge in particular, two people that are going to staff this office behind me,” Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said.

Mayor Caldwell says the new office will cut down on lines at other DMVs.

The military supports the idea but first the plan has to pass through the Honolulu City Council.

Some council members have said they support the plan.
