A 67-year-old woman was killed in Kalihi on Tuesday morning when she was struck by a pickup truck near the intersection of North King Street and Kopke Street, according to police.
Lt. Robert Towne of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division tells Hawaii News Now that the woman was walking in a marked crosswalk just after 6 a.m. when she was hit by the beige pickup truck.
Alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors in the crash, according to Lt. Towne, but poor visibility due to darkness and rainy weather may have resulted in the accident.
Police officials say they have opened a negligent homicide case, but were unable to say whether the driver of the pickup truck would be charged in the accident.
Hawaii News Now reporters at the scene of the accident were told that the impact of the crash caused the woman to be thrown at least 15 feet.
The accident resulted in Oahu’s tenth traffic-related fatality of the year, compared to eleven at the same time in 2013.
